How To Start Exercising Again After Putting On Weight

I used to be able to walk two miles in under thirty minutes. This was when I weighed about two hundred pounds.
Now of course I am quite a bit heavier and have not walked any significant distance in over four years. Most of it was spent in a car traveling the country shooting the documentary ‘Finding Thin’. Probably would have been good to get out and do some activity somewhere.
Now when I go out for a walk, I can go a couple blocks but then give out with heavy breathing. If going up hill, I am really in trouble.
There must be a way to make it back.
The weight has finally started to come off over the last few months but as I know so well, there is a major component missing. I have got to get out there and walk.
I think back to the days when I was well over four hundred pounds and just started two houses at a time. I then built up house by house until I was really down in weight and kicking butt.
This time around though, I am out here in the hills of L.A. and that does make it more interesting and a heck of a lot tougher. Though when I get to the easier parts I get to walk past Warner Brothers and I love their studio lot.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to walk for weight loss as much as just the endorphin rush feeling better.
It is just a struggle to do that I am wondering if there are other exercises that I should to until more of the weight comes off first.
Every pound down makes it even easier to walk up.
I am sure that others of you heavy and thin have gone through this. It is so discouraging at times to be starting over but I am the most stubborn person who will not give up. The word no does not exist in my vocabulary. I like to find a way around walls.
So if any of you have been through this and have any suggestions, I really could use the help.

Ever since the last month, I have found my self not eating emotionally anymore. This was one of my biggest problems and I was so glad to get past it. A wish come true. Yet with ever road I pass, there is always a speed bump or two. The latest one came to me while working ten hour days cutting ‘Finding Thin’ and taking meetings. I discovered I was eating far less then I should be. There was just so much to do that I was neglecting to eat enough. It was slowing down my metabolism and causing me to tire easily and for my weight loss to slow. Who would have though that would be even be possible? I would have dreamed for a problem like that. Well… maybe not.
When growing up I was always thought that less was more. If you went lower on the calories, you would lose more weight. That is so not the case. It really is a game of balance. Not too much and not too little. Finding that sense of balance is not easy by any way but imaginable. Yet it is actually enjoyable since I get to eat more of the foods that I enjoy and do now feel stronger. This was one of the things that I liked about the new Weight Watchers program. It did not deprive me. It made it much easer then counting calories and made sense to me.
As a former dieter, I knew how to skip on the calories but that was not the answer.
Now with diabetes. it makes it even the more a bit more difficult sometimes in choices but nowhere near impossible. I am already finding that the diabetes is going down which means I can stay off the insulin. This of course thrills me. After all, who likes sticking themselves with needles. Though there are millions that are forced to every day and I pray we can beat this dreaded disease one day. I am so fortunate enough to be able to now control this through different eating substitutions. You notice I don’t say diet much since I hate the word.
There are some people out there that have ways they recommend to trick your body but that just seems wrong. My body has gone through enough and deserves to be treated better.
So as I make it past emotional eating, I just have to remind myself to eat enough and at the right times during the day.
The next obstacle is learning to start walking again without wanting to fall over.
I would love to hear from anyone who face those same challenges that I do.

Brain Surgery For Weight LossPeople have been looking for a quick fix to weight loss for years. The quick fix for or holy grail of successful dieting.. Everything from diet pills to starvation methods or even tape worms.
Nothing has ever worked.
Then we finally got into a version of taping the mouth closed through wires. When that did not work, we went to Gastric Bypass Surgery.
After that did not seem to be a hundred percent or totally safe, the medical industry went with a less invasive method called the ‘Lap Band’ surgery.
This did not really work all that much better either and still had possible fatal complications as well.
Now comes the winner of them all. Brain surgery. As barbaric as it sounds, they figure they can mess around with the wiring in your brain to get it right.
What everyone keeps missing is that no one is getting to the real problem. Teaching the person how to explore what or why they are eating.
It is just another method to go around the problem and take away the hunger.
There is no education or studying of the inner cognitive workings of the mind when it relates to food.
Dr. Judith Beck worked on a couple of books based on eating and the cognitive behavioral therapy approach. Usually called CBT for short, it was a valid attempt at trying to figure out why instead of how.
The ironic thing is that when one of the early people who had the surgery known as ‘Deep Brain Stimulation’, he started to put weight back on.
Know one could figure out why.
Well, they actually put a on/off switch on the product and the person was turning the unit off so he or she could eat when hungry.
This is why it still goes back to why we are choosing to eat in the first place. Not just trying to shut of the feeling of hunger.
There is a impulse that has to be dealt with and explored before we can move on to any long lasting and permanent weight loss.
As of now, there is no such thing other then good old fashion therapy and weight groups.

Before I begin, it is true that as an obese person I do need more material then the normal person.
That could certainly make for the higher price for the plus sized cloths. Though do consider that when buying in bulk, the price does go down.

Big Sizes Mean Big Money

I have heard many argue that the bigger you are the more you should pay. Though if we go ahead with that argument, the issue becomes much larger. The truth is that big and tall stores are charging three to four times the prices.
I went looking for a 3x bathing suit and was told it would cost me over fifty dollars. This would normally be around ten dollars in a Target or Walmart.
So why do heavy people pay such large prices. It feels as though we are getting taken advantage of at the over-sized stores.
Some people say if you can’t go to the normal sized stores then that is your problem.
The reason that I take issue with the “normal” phrase may be a shock to you. Right now   over sixty percent or more of U.S.A. is overweight or obese.

That would put the heavy people in the majority and actually the normal ones.
So my question is still why we should pay more money for something that is far greater in demand.
Wait… I think I just answered my own question. Greater demand means greater profits.
It has nothing to do with discrimination or prejudice. Instead it is pure greed.
So my hat goes off to the plus size stores for getting what they can but sooner or later the Targets’ and Walmart’s are going to catch up. So watch out.

Should MLB Impose Weight Limitations on its Players?

I love baseball as much as any other person does but there is a serious weight problem, which seems to be affecting many of today’s players.

For example, when today’s sports heroes are so overweight and can hardly take first base, there is clearly a negative message being ignored.

I mean look at names like Bobby Jenks, Sir Sidney Ponson, David Wells, or Dmitri Young; all great players but with serious obesity problems.

How can we set so many conditions for the teams to meet and yet allow obesity to be so prevalent within the leagues? I mean they used to go crazy back in the day when “Refrigerator” Perry of the Chicago Bears weighed too much and would be huffing and puffing on the field.

Why not do the same for baseball?

Wouldn’t that teach our children that being overweight is an accepted social norm, since you can be active and on a Major League Baseball Team while being overweight?

While it is true that you can sometimes be healthy and overweight, but that most certainly won’t last forever. Soon most of the obesity-related conditions such as Diabetes, Cancer and Heart Disease would set in.

While all these men are great players, they do have a responsibility to set a good image for their fans.

Being from Chicago, I used to watch Bobby Jenks when he was with The White Sox and the man could hardly make it from the dugout to the pitchers mound.

So why not take some of the millions of dollars paid out and show them the way to use some great resources like Weight Watchers, Jillian Michaels, or even living by the Fitness Guru Tony Horton of P90X.

If these guys can make it to the major leagues, then they certainly can work on their own diets as well as doing something about their weight.

Either that, or address their struggles publicly to help others know that they are not alone.

Can Depression Cause Weight Gain Or Can Weight Gain Cause Depression?

I have been up and down with my weight…I’ve been all the way up to 500 pounds and all the way down to 150 pounds.
When I was at my heaviest, I was the most depressed I had ever been and on medication to treat it. Some pills had the added potential stress of gaining weight  but I had to take my chances…trying to fix my problem while adding to it.

When I lost most of the weight, the journey of my weight loss through dieting really brought me joy. I wouldn’t even look in the mirror when I was so heavy, and even still could not see a thin person when I lost all the weight.

It feels like a never ending vicious cycle. It’s like a lose-lose situation. Or, had my depression always been there from the start?

I am much heavier but I’m working my way back down. There are good days and bad ones. While I am truly a happy person when I physically feel better and am eating right, I still battle that component of depression that can lead to emotional eating. I am addressing this issue to not only try to find out why it is so important to get in touch with your emotions but also due to the fact that in most states,  healthcare is getting cut and many of the worst cases are caused and effected by obesity. And obesity  is getting to an all time high.

We are certainly stuck in financially devastating times. There must be a way to try and help people cope. If not just the traditional sit down therapy session, then perhaps online groups and therapists that would come forward for free.
The overhead would be cheaper and as technology gets better and better, we would be able to help more and more people efficiently.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been meeting with experts in trying to understand and discuss the topics of emotional eating, depression, and myself.
It hasn’t been 100% successful but it has significantly helped me recognize my feelings. Now when I feel the need to turn to food, I use my new coping skills to make better decisions. Who knows, maybe I’ll be courageous enough to start the P90X by Tony Horton to really get my blood pumping instead of clogging my arteries.

As I have been discovering more and more, there is more and more hope out there. I just wish that more people would ask “why?” instead “how”.
With exercise and a good diet you’re halfway there; but you must include your own insight as well.

So the next time one of us picks up a bag of chips of piece of cake, just take the time to ask yourself why. You might be very surprised to find out that it has nothing to do with hunger.

The one thing that I have always tried to do with our film ‘Finding Thin’ is to create a community. Selling tickets is second hand, but trying to help and bond with people in need is first.
