Bree Boyce Makes History For The Fat People

When I interviewed Bree for ‘Finding Thin’ months ago, she did nothing but intrigue me.

This woman weighed over 230 Pounds and lost it all…only to win a local beauty contest to become “Miss Cap Cities”.

She was awe-inspiring and I wished her the best of luck for her future endeavors.

Recently, Bree went on to become Miss South Carolina. Bree was making history. She was an obese woman that shredded the pounds by eating well and working out, and she could possibly be our next Miss America.

Bree is the first person to raise the bar for what can be done with weight loss and personal success.

Surely she still would have been beautiful, but had Bree stayed at her original weight, I don’t believe she would have the same outcome in pageantry.

She is not only a front runner Miss America, but a front runner in teaching our obese society that we can lose our weight and most importantly, be healthy. There are so many good looking and healthy people stuck in overweight body’s and stuck from getting out.

Bree escaped her obese path by the good old fashioned way… and she made all of us heavy folk proud, and most of all, hopeful.

She’s a hero.

My Visit With Ruby

Ruby Gettinger talking with Barry Roskin BlakeI traveled almost eighteen hours each way for this interview;  this was officially the longest trip I had taken by car for ‘Finding Thin’. After three years of researching the secret for what it was to truly “find thin”, it was coming to an end.

At first I had only seen Ruby on The Style Network a few times during  my fifteen hour work days on the film. But through Facebook, iTunes, Hulu, and YouTube, I was able to find hours of footage to look at and really get a feel for what Ruby was all about.

Originally I was going to simply interview her by phone but after watching her story….there was no way I was not going see this amazing woman in person. I felt like she was someone who I would immediately bond with; and I was exactly right.

With all my pain from the aftermath of my previous accident, every minute in the car felt incredibly daunting. But I refused to give in; this was going to be my final interview for the film, and Ruby was going to be the perfect finish.

When I first arrived, she looked different. Ruby had lost a great deal of weight and looked terrific. She was beautiful on both the inside and outside.  I ended up sitting with her on the couch and kitchen table with her family and friends, and I immediately felt at home.

Of course after losing my most beloved dog the other week, I had been in a very depressed state…probably the saddest I had ever been in a long time. Then I met Ruby’s beautiful dog. She sat between us during our first hour on the couch and fell asleep against my leg. It was one of the few interviews that I wanted to cry in. It was ironic that Ruby not only helped me as a person, but her dog got in on the action as well. I even offered her a thousand dollars for the dog; but like me, there wasn’t a price tag big enough for Ruby to let go of her “wo-man’s” best friend.

We shared so much in common and it was comforting. Some might ask, how could a woman who is heavy herself, help me? Well the answer is simple. We both could relate in a way that most thin people could not. We had gone through many of the same experiences and felt the same way about many issues.

Ruby has lost weight and is gaining happiness and hope along the way.  I wish I could tell you more about this inspirational woman, but you’ll have to wait until you see the movie.

In the meantime, check out Ruby Gettinger’s show because this is one beautiful, intelligent, and purely sweet person for which I am a better person for knowing.

Welcome Back to Weight Watchers

About five years ago before my accident, I lost an incredible amount of weight.

This was partly due to belonging to a very helpful group ran by Weight Watchers.

My doctors approved and I had made many a friend.

Then tragedy had struck when I was rear ended by a truck while driving by a car that led to many medications, injections and eventual surgeries. With this, my weight ballooned back up and I was not able to attend meetings.

I was looking for someone or something to blame and I felt there was no weight loss program or book out there that could help me.

Then last Friday; I was able to sit down with the President and Chief Executive Officer David Kirchoff. He flew into Chicago from NY and was a pleasure to sit down with.

At first I did not know what to expect. After all, Weight Watchers had just introduced a revamping to their program and perhaps they were just out to promote that.

To my great surprise, David only touched on that when asked. Instead, he talked to me as any fellow person would with a weight problem. The struggles and eating problems affected him as much as anybody else.

He talked about what he experienced and that this is a lifestyle change that we all have to go through.

Okay, I have heard this over and over… so what made this different?

First I was given a chance to I watch a group of members meet beforehand. They really were there for each other. They bonded and supported each and every story or problem that needed it.

I was then able to look at the new program itself. Instead of just listing foods and numbers or points, the conversation went into emotional eating and a slew of other issues. I was really shocked.

A group charging a nominal fee every week that lets you eat what you want but tries to guide you towards better choices…this is just unheard of. So with optimistic delight, it really was. At no point did I look at all the different foods laid out and feel like I was deprived or on a diet.

I mean they have Jennifer Hudson promoting them. She is one of the most gifted and talented motion picture stars out there who had no reason to join on for the exposure. So what could draw Jennifer in to this?

Perhaps it was the fact that this group really was filled with care and integrity. I felt so invigorated standing by and watching a truly inspiring group and this was even before I was sat down with Mr. Kirchoff.

If there was ever a man to lead a company, this was the guy to do it. He is on the road several times a year just to talk to fellow members to give and receive the support that we all need.

I am supposed to be unbiased in this film and have always kept that promise to myself as a filmmaker. Though I cannot help but disclose what I felt was one of the best interviews and rediscoveries that I have had in my three years making this film.

So I will actually encourage you to take a very close look at this group and give it a try.

I know that I am going to. That doesn’t mean it is going to be easy and all roses but I have a gut feeling that it is going to be the help that I am looking for.

As all of you know, I will film my progress every few days and keep you informed in the film. I just really have to say that this is by far, one of the most exciting moments of the film so far.
