Over the last decade, I have heard so many things against the so called 99 cent meals. Fast food was terrible for you and the cause of my obesity. It must be taken off my list of choices to stop at and I would be banished to eating at home for the rest of my life.

Yet now that I am on Weight Watchers, I am told I can eat anything I want. Just with a more informed take on things.

At first I thought they were just telling me what I wanted to hear. Boy was I pleasantly surprised to be wrong. I just need to understand how it all plays into my health and daily intake.

So after venturing over to my local Wendy’s, I looked at what choices I did have for 99 cents.

There were frosty’s and some other questionable items. Yet there were also baked potatoes, chili and broiled chicken sandwiches. Really good tasting. They even listed the calories on the menu for most items and gave me great suggestions.

I had always thought that information was supposed to be hidden in the dark cellars or bank vaults for no one to ever see. Fast food was supposed to be evil and I should not ever go near it. Yet with so many different selections, I could now pick a heck of a lot of cheaper foods and still make tasty decisions that won’t come back to haunt me. Sort of like a whole bunch of other decisions in my life I made but came to regret. That is a time for another story though.

Yet how could this be. I thought I was going to have to eat at home forever like a hermit. That or find a expensive restaurant that would prepare the meals exactly the way I wanted.

Boy was I pleasantly wrong.

I was now able to eat and feel no guilt while being able to save some well needed money. In this economy that was a bargain.

So where were the pounds. How could a baked potato with cheese, a grilled chicken sandwich and a small chili keep me thin?

Fast food restaurants were supposed to make me fat. They were the ones pushing all those double hamburgers and fries down my throat. Or were they?

When I went to order, I had choices on the menu from a whole bunch of different good foods. Most with the calories listed right there for me to see and nobody was screaming at me to buy them.

So after telling myself I could go there without fear, I have visited a few more times in the last week and find it so much easier to buy what I want without any terrible guilt or temptation.

I actually enjoyed the grilled chicken. There were great other like caesar wraps and other salads as well.

It was just choosing to have one, not the three or four I used to order. I saw thin people making those choices as well and I know they are not all that different from me. They are not starving to death and look pretty happy.

Suddenly I was eating like a normal person without any fear of gaining weight. I did not feel hungry and was starting to lose weight. Taking off those pounds that were making me feel so sick all these years was the greatest feeling of success.

I began to understand that it was not fast food restaurants that were making me fat. It was not even the grocery stores that put the bakery in the front of the store or even all those yummy commercials for the newest sugary deserts or cereals on television.

All I had to do was eat what were some reasonable choices made with some guidance. For me it was the Weight Watchers 360 program that helped open my eyes. Yet there are other programs for people that might want something different. I am a fan of over eaters anonymous or personal therapists to figure out more about why I make some of the choices that I do.

I was so much happier that I no longer had to cary any disdain or avoid every fast food restaurant I see from my car.

It was all about what my choices and what to order when I was there. I was the one with the power to make my own choices. Diet communism was over!

I even found that if the calories were not present, they had them behind the counter or online. Either way, pretty easy access. Some states now even require fast food restaurants to list the calories right up there for all to see.

So the list of the blame game becomes one major step less, as the 99 cent weight loss plan began to work.

I love choices and now have so many more.

Ever since the last month, I have found my self not eating emotionally anymore. This was one of my biggest problems and I was so glad to get past it. A wish come true. Yet with ever road I pass, there is always a speed bump or two. The latest one came to me while working ten hour days cutting ‘Finding Thin’ and taking meetings. I discovered I was eating far less then I should be. There was just so much to do that I was neglecting to eat enough. It was slowing down my metabolism and causing me to tire easily and for my weight loss to slow. Who would have though that would be even be possible? I would have dreamed for a problem like that. Well… maybe not.
When growing up I was always thought that less was more. If you went lower on the calories, you would lose more weight. That is so not the case. It really is a game of balance. Not too much and not too little. Finding that sense of balance is not easy by any way but imaginable. Yet it is actually enjoyable since I get to eat more of the foods that I enjoy and do now feel stronger. This was one of the things that I liked about the new Weight Watchers program. It did not deprive me. It made it much easer then counting calories and made sense to me.
As a former dieter, I knew how to skip on the calories but that was not the answer.
Now with diabetes. it makes it even the more a bit more difficult sometimes in choices but nowhere near impossible. I am already finding that the diabetes is going down which means I can stay off the insulin. This of course thrills me. After all, who likes sticking themselves with needles. Though there are millions that are forced to every day and I pray we can beat this dreaded disease one day. I am so fortunate enough to be able to now control this through different eating substitutions. You notice I don’t say diet much since I hate the word.
There are some people out there that have ways they recommend to trick your body but that just seems wrong. My body has gone through enough and deserves to be treated better.
So as I make it past emotional eating, I just have to remind myself to eat enough and at the right times during the day.
The next obstacle is learning to start walking again without wanting to fall over.

The Weight Loss Journey Comes To A Close A New Chapter Begins

I have traveled over half the country in search of losing weight. Had the chance to meet over three hundred experts and celebrities during shooting the upcoming film ‘Finding Thin’. I started at one weight and ended up gaining more while trying some of the new diets that might have that magic bullet. This was not what was supposed to happen. Yet my mission was to set out to save the world. That was until I found out that I needed to save myself first, then I could figure out the rest. The funny thing is that it took until that last few miles when I moved out to L.A. to really have it kick in. This was my last destination on the journey and a place that I was to call home.
The last year had many changes in my life. I had lost two of my beloved pets, a very close friend who turned out to be a wolf in a sheep cloths and most importantly… myself.
Then it began to change. I suddenly began to find myself. No longer did I find the need for emotional eating. Of course that brought many challenges. Yet I never stopped and was able to continue on and grow the movie to the finest state it has ever been in as well as myself personally.
We have some of the finest names and I don’t know where to begin thanking people.
Do I start with Jillian Michaels who really opened the door for us and showed me that we don’t always have to be victims. Or was it Dr. Michael Roizen over at The ‘Cleveland Clinic’ who showed me that I don’t need to feel so old and can reverse the process. He also introduced me to the mighty ‘Health Corps’ created by the efforts of Dr. Oz and ran by the lovely Michelle Bouchard. Then of course there was Bob Harper of ‘The Biggest Loser’ who was so real and made me laugh so hard. Then there was Tony Horton of ‘P90X’, not only the strongest guy for his young age but I am not sure he ever takes a breath. He is that good.. Then I begin to think of David Wallace of ‘Weight Watchers’ who helped get me back on track’. Of course I cant forget the king of comedy George Wallace or the wit and heart of actress Carlease Burke. There are just so many great people that have changed my life and contributed to making this movie that that much more. I have enough material to make three films. There are just so many names to thank. I just hope they help to bring the change and hope to your life as they have to mine. This has been the greatest honer and chance that I could have ever been given. Far from what I ever had hoped for. Beating my wildest dreams.
As I settle in now for the final phase of the movie and make my new home in L.A., I will be writing more frequently. Not to push the film, which I hope you will see, but to be there for you with new thoughts and stories form the battles lines each and every day. Have hope for this is a journey we take together.

Heavy People Getting Burned At the Clothing Store

Fat People Punished For Buying Cloths

Before I begin, it is true that as an obese person I do need more material then the normal person.
That could certainly make for the higher price for the plus sized cloths. Though do consider that when buying in bulk, the price does go down.

Big Sizes Mean Big Money

I have heard many argue that the bigger you are the more you should pay. Though if we go ahead with that argument, the issue becomes much larger. The truth is that big and tall stores are charging three to four times the prices.
I went looking for a 3x bathing suit and was told it would cost me over fifty dollars. This would normally be around ten dollars in a Target or Walmart.
So why do heavy people pay such large prices. It feels as though we are getting taken advantage of at the over-sized stores.
Some people say if you can’t go to the normal sized stores then that is your problem.
The reason that I take issue with the “normal” phrase may be a shock to you. Right now   over sixty percent or more of U.S.A. is overweight or obese.

That would put the heavy people in the majority and actually the normal ones.
So my question is still why we should pay more money for something that is far greater in demand.
Wait… I think I just answered my own question. Greater demand means greater profits.
It has nothing to do with discrimination or prejudice. Instead it is pure greed.
So my hat goes off to the plus size stores for getting what they can but sooner or later the Targets’ and Walmart’s are going to catch up. So watch out.

Perhaps this sounds like a strange idea, but when you break it down, it can clear up some speculation.

2. When we are healthy all the parts of our body are able to function properly.

4. Being healthy can help your body better maintain one of its most important parts, the brain!

Strange has turned into simple.

The overall health of our brain and our bodies can have a major impact on how well we are able to perform certain cognitive functions.

If we partake in unhealthy activities such as smoking or becoming overweight, we increase our risk of unhealthier brains and cognitive abilities. In order to keep our minds in tip-top shape, we must take care of our bodies’ health and well-being. Who knows, perhaps increasing our health can also help us increase our wealth?

Solving America’s Health Problems With The Next Generation

As America continues to stay on top as one of the unhealthiest countries in the world, we are seeing a tremendous growth of obesity and weight issues among our adult population and children as well. INC.com has noted that “according to the Center for Disease Control, approximately 17% of all children in the U.S. are obese.” They are the future of our country, and they are looking bigger than ever before.

I don’t believe that short term solutions work very well for truly solving any problem, therefore, we must look to longer-term solutions that are responsible and sustainable now and into the future. The current children of America are the future of this country, and it is up to them to decide what will happen down the road. So why do we do such a poor job at teaching them healthy habits and such a good job at raising them to make bigger health mistakes than ourselves?

I’ve talked with my younger cousins, my friend’s kids, and other children and they excitedly tell me how much they love eating fast food and playing video games all day. It’s quite alarming if you think about it, our next generation seems likely to be worse off than we already are.

So, how can we fix the problem? It is known that prisons often serve better food than our public schools do. Children are eating at least one meal- five days out of the week- that is high in calories and low in essential nutrients that the body needs to stay fit and healthy. I am almost certain that many of them consume many more meals throughout the week that consist of fast food or other unhealthy meals. We teach children how to read, write, and do arithmetic in school, why can’t we teach them to eat healthier and stay more active as well?

At least one company has set out to do something about this problem. Revolution Foods is helping to bring access to nutrient rich meals that taste good to low-income schools. They have realized that by targeting schools with healthy food alternatives, they can help make the world a better and healthier place to live!

It was 9AM on a Tuesday and the workday had just begun. I started sifting through my emails and came upon one of the most difficult tasks I was going to have to fulfill at work.

The email read:

Happy Tuesday,

Just wanted to remind everyone that tomorrow, Wednesday is our first TEAM TREAT PARTY on the 3rd floor.

Everyone will bring in their favorite treat/nosh/baked item..etc. of their choice to share with the team and we can munch all day!

Did I just read, “TREAT PARTY”? Cookies, candy, donuts, home made cupcakes…Oh my… I was screwed.

I’d been watching what I’d been eating and steering clear of said sweets.  I was quite proud of myself for having the ability to choose healthier foods. My current diet was comparable to the D.A.R.E program back in the 80’s; when it came to the cravings of my sweet tooth, I just said “no”.

Monday night felt like the dress rehearsal to Wednesday’s Greatest Show on Earth… entitled “Courtney’s Will Power.”

Cut to Wednesday- I walked in with home made cookies to at least contribute to the party  I was dreading.  Hey, I’m still a team player.   I end up placing my cookies next to a table filled with treats. It was like the land of the unhealthy, and I have visited that land quite a few times…

Worst of all, this table was set right next to my desk.

The smells of deliciousness were haunting.

The sights of icing, chocolate chips, and sprinkles were daunting.

The odds of making healthy choices were not in my favor but my determination stayed strong. As each co-worker walked up to the table-o-treats raving about every flavor they tasted, I found myself tuning out and turning their praises of one another’s baked goods into my own white noise.  I simply turned my head the opposite way. I kept calm and carried on.  I just said “no”.

As enticing as Wednesday’s Team Treat Party was, my will power surpassed my cravings. I was at peace with myself without eating a piece of a treat. Sure it would’ve been enjoyable to join in on taste-testing like the rest, but I had a change of heart. Having a moment of euphoric sweetness couldn’t outweigh the moments of euphoria from a healthy lifestyle.

I started this journey and I intend on it being a never-ending adventure. I’ll have my treats from time to time, sure. But now I have proven to myself that I can just say no.

And that is a treat in of itself.
