It’s Smart To Be Healthy

We all know that getting healthy can bring  tremendous amount of positive results in our lives… but did you know that being healthier can also help you become smarter?

Perhaps this sounds like a strange idea, but when you break it down, it can clear up some speculation.

1. The brain is a part of the human body

2. When we are healthy all the parts of our body are able to function properly.

4. Being healthy can help your body better maintain one of its most important parts, the brain!

Strange has turned into simple.

The overall health of our brain and our bodies can have a major impact on how well we are able to perform certain cognitive functions.

If we partake in unhealthy activities such as smoking or becoming overweight, we increase our risk of unhealthier brains and cognitive abilities. In order to keep our minds in tip-top shape, we must take care of our bodies’ health and well-being. Who knows, perhaps increasing our health can also help us increase our wealth?

Get Up and Go

When it comes to dieting, exercising, and just overall staying healthy, many of us would probably be classified as insane! How many times have you tried the same or very similar diets over and over again? How about the exercise routine you are doing, is it actually working and making results? Often times, we won’t even notice that we are beating ourselves up over something so silly and obvious, try something new!

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Our former president sums things up pretty well for us in a simple quote. The point is, it doesn’t really matter what you do, it just matters that you are doing something. If and/or when that something stops working, then try something else!

Solving America’s Health Problems With The Next Generation

As America continues to stay on top as one of the unhealthiest countries in the world, we are seeing a tremendous growth of obesity and weight issues among our adult population and children as well. INC.com has noted that “according to the Center for Disease Control, approximately 17% of all children in the U.S. are obese.” They are the future of our country, and they are looking bigger than ever before.

I don’t believe that short term solutions work very well for truly solving any problem, therefore, we must look to longer-term solutions that are responsible and sustainable now and into the future. The current children of America are the future of this country, and it is up to them to decide what will happen down the road. So why do we do such a poor job at teaching them healthy habits and such a good job at raising them to make bigger health mistakes than ourselves?

I’ve talked with my younger cousins, my friend’s kids, and other children and they excitedly tell me how much they love eating fast food and playing video games all day. It’s quite alarming if you think about it, our next generation seems likely to be worse off than we already are.

So, how can we fix the problem? It is known that prisons often serve better food than our public schools do. Children are eating at least one meal- five days out of the week- that is high in calories and low in essential nutrients that the body needs to stay fit and healthy. I am almost certain that many of them consume many more meals throughout the week that consist of fast food or other unhealthy meals. We teach children how to read, write, and do arithmetic in school, why can’t we teach them to eat healthier and stay more active as well?

At least one company has set out to do something about this problem. Revolution Foods is helping to bring access to nutrient rich meals that taste good to low-income schools. They have realized that by targeting schools with healthy food alternatives, they can help make the world a better and healthier place to live!

It was 9AM on a Tuesday and the workday had just begun. I started sifting through my emails and came upon one of the most difficult tasks I was going to have to fulfill at work.

The email read:

Happy Tuesday,

Just wanted to remind everyone that tomorrow, Wednesday is our first TEAM TREAT PARTY on the 3rd floor.

Everyone will bring in their favorite treat/nosh/baked item..etc. of their choice to share with the team and we can munch all day!

Did I just read, “TREAT PARTY”? Cookies, candy, donuts, home made cupcakes…Oh my… I was screwed.

I’d been watching what I’d been eating and steering clear of said sweets.  I was quite proud of myself for having the ability to choose healthier foods. My current diet was comparable to the D.A.R.E program back in the 80’s; when it came to the cravings of my sweet tooth, I just said “no”.

Monday night felt like the dress rehearsal to Wednesday’s Greatest Show on Earth… entitled “Courtney’s Will Power.”

Cut to Wednesday- I walked in with home made cookies to at least contribute to the party  I was dreading.  Hey, I’m still a team player.   I end up placing my cookies next to a table filled with treats. It was like the land of the unhealthy, and I have visited that land quite a few times…

Worst of all, this table was set right next to my desk.

The smells of deliciousness were haunting.

The sights of icing, chocolate chips, and sprinkles were daunting.

The odds of making healthy choices were not in my favor but my determination stayed strong. As each co-worker walked up to the table-o-treats raving about every flavor they tasted, I found myself tuning out and turning their praises of one another’s baked goods into my own white noise.  I simply turned my head the opposite way. I kept calm and carried on.  I just said “no”.

As enticing as Wednesday’s Team Treat Party was, my will power surpassed my cravings. I was at peace with myself without eating a piece of a treat. Sure it would’ve been enjoyable to join in on taste-testing like the rest, but I had a change of heart. Having a moment of euphoric sweetness couldn’t outweigh the moments of euphoria from a healthy lifestyle.

I started this journey and I intend on it being a never-ending adventure. I’ll have my treats from time to time, sure. But now I have proven to myself that I can just say no.

And that is a treat in of itself.

Do Americans Work To Gain Weight?

Throughout the 1900’s in America, we were known for our powerful and growing production industry. Many people worked in factories and other jobs that required physical activity at work. Today in America, most of the jobs here are service industry jobs that for the most part don’t require physical activity beyond visiting the coffee machine and getting back to your desk.

It is blatantly obvious that America is now one of the most notoriously unhealthy countries in the world. We are very well known for our overindulgence in unhealthy activities, most notably, living sedentary lifestyles and consuming way too many unhealthy foods (http://www.heartattackgrill.com). Despite the growing number of fast food chains that seem to be popping up on every corner, we can’t place our blame on them for our weight issues. We all have a choice as to where we eat, but that is only half of the problem at hand.

Most of us can agree, especially those of us who are overweight, that we aren’t getting enough physical activity in our days. There are thousands of excuses as to why we might not get in our needed physical activity ranging everywhere from “I am to tired after working all day” to “I just can’t do it.”

Despite the fact that I would like to say we need to stop making excuses and placing blame elsewhere, there is some validity to people who blame working all day as the reason to why they don’t exercise. Even if your job isn’t physically demanding, we are often mentally drained by the end of the day and it becomes hard to find the motivation to wear yourself out even more. So, what do we do?

We need to find ways to bring more physical activity into the office. I am not saying that we need to replace our desks with treadmills that have a computer attached to it, but we need to find ways to allow employees to get away from sitting in a chair and not moving all day. If that means getting a headset and notepad so you can walk around the office and take phone calls, then we should highly consider it. Some places, like Google, have taken things a step further by offering a work out facility in the office.

If you could design the perfect office that blends physical well being with staying productive, how would you do it?

Will this help our eating habits?

We are all guilty of not eating healthy all the time, but we are probably even worse at making healthy choices when we are out to eat. When the menus are overloaded with delicious looking  foods that are just screaming our names, its hard to pick that wimpy salad when it’s sitting right next to a picture of a hot, thick, and juicy hamburger. So, is it the restaurants fault that we make poor healthy choices when we go out?

The Government has taken a closer look at this question and has come up with their own solution; make it mandatory for fast food restaurants and vending machines to display nutritional information. At first glance, this sounds great…but then you start to think about it, and you might realize that you never paid much attention to those labels anyway and that they can play psychological tricks on your mind.

So the question is, do you think giving consumers more information will lead to healthier choices?

Are we to blame for our weight gain?

It is so easy to take your finger and point it at someone or something else as the cause of our weight problem here in America. We could easily blame all the fast food restaurants that sit on every corner, the internet for allowing us to not have to physically be everywhere, or the fact that every check out counter is loaded with candy bars that we can’t resist as a last minute purchase.

Blame someone else, its as easy as pressing a button.

Just because we can blame almost anything for our weight problems, doesn’t make us right. We need to realize that the most responsible party for our weight control is not the fast food restaurants, the advertising, or anything else of that sort, but rather, it is ourselves that need to be held responsible.

Sure it might not be entirely your fault that you are the way you are, but you are the one who is ultimately responsible for making any changes for yourself. Your mother and father may have raised you to have poor diet and exercising habits, but as an adult, it is your responsibility to acknowledge and change those habits if you desire.

Stop placing the blame on others, and realize that if you have the time to complain about something, you probably have the time to make a change.
